Monte Pío

Monte Pío is a small family-run business deeply rooted in the heart of Atlantic Galicia. Founded in 1979 in Ribadumia, in the heart of the Val do Salnés subzone in Rías Baixas, the winery is the result of a long generational effort. Today, this legacy is carried on by Pablo Martínez Gago, a winemaker and oenologist, the tireless soul behind the project. The motto is simple yet powerful: “the raw material comes first.” This is why the focus is primarily on the vineyard, where the quality of the grapes is built day after day, among sandy plots, brackish breezes, and vines that are over 50 years old.

The production philosophy of Monte Pío is based on respectful and low-intervention practices. The harvest is strictly manual, in 15 kg crates, and all fermentations occur spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The Albariño whites, grown on sandy soils and often just a few meters from the ocean, are vinified in steel or terracotta amphorae, depending on the cuvée, and aged on fine lees for long months. For the reds, produced in limited quantities from native varieties, Pablo prefers the maceration with stems and medium-long aging in used large barrels. The use of sulfur is minimal, as is any invasive oenological intervention.

The wines of Monte Pío are direct, vibrant, and deeply territorial. The Albariño-based whites express the marine soul of Val do Salnés: citrus and floral notes with salty touches, all crowned by the typical, cutting freshness of the local whites. The reds tell a lesser-known side of Galician winemaking: the most famous Mencía meets Espadeiro and Caiño in elegant, juicy wines with a balsamic soul, a true hallmark of the production. Honest and unmasked, only bottles capable of moving those who seek authenticity, consistency, and character.
