Biondi Santi

The Biondi-Santi brand is not only one of the most famous in the peninsula and a true ambassador of Italian wine excellence worldwide, but it is also intimately linked to the birth of one of our great wines: Brunello di Montalcino. This Tuscan wine, in fact, owes its very existence to the talent and passion of Clemente Biondi Santi, who was the first to begin the experiments that later led to the creation of this extraordinary red. Convinced of the qualities of the Montalcino terroir and in particular of the Tenuta Greppo, Clemente Biondi Santi began to work on a selection of the best biotypes of Sangiovese, which were capable of producing wines of better quality, intense, elegant, and long-lived. A long job in the vineyard that led to isolating a particular clone of Sangiovese grosso, the BBS11 (Brunello Biondi Santi 11), which is the foundation of the great wines of the estate.

Thanks to the work and intuition of one man, a great wine was born. Biondi-Santi produced its first vintage of Brunello in 1888, and even today its wines are recognized among the best in the world.denomination.  Clemente Biondi-Santi has been able to enhance a territory that since Etruscan and then Roman times has always hosted the cultivation of the vine, along with olive trees, arable crops, and pastoralism. Despite its ancient origins, the wines of Montalcino struggled to carve out a prominent place in the Italian and international landscape. Until the post-World War II period, Montalcino was known only by a few enthusiasts and connoisseurs. Only with the establishment of the DOC in 1966 and the DOCG in 1980 did the fame of the reds from this isolated hill in Tuscany become true protagonists, starting to receive acclaim from the most important national and foreign critics.

The Tenuta Biondi-Santi Il Greppo is located in the southeast area of the hill of Montalcino, in a particularly suited and always very windy area. The estate extends over 26 hectares and is cultivated with terraced vineyards. The soils are poor and stony, with a strong component of galestro, ideal for Sangiovese, which in these conditions expresses itself with particular finesse and elegance, yielding grapes of great balance. For seven generations, the estate has been managed with the same care and meticulous attention, with the sole objective of continuing to produce great wines. The management of the vineyards with low yields, the rigorous selection of grapes before proceeding to vinification, the fermentations, and the long aging processes conducted with patience and respect for the raw material, allow for the production of wines appreciated all over the world.
