Ruiz De Cardenas
In Casteggio, in the Oltrepò Pavese area, the Ruiz de Cardenas winery produces sparkling wines and fine still wines of remarkable quality with the intent to enhance this beautiful territory of the province of Pavia. It all began in 1979 with Gianluca Ruiz de Cardenas, a Milanese entrepreneur of distant Spanish origins who that year almost playfully purchased a small vineyard in the Casteggio area, replanting it with clones of Pinot Nero. The entrepreneur, wondering why in Oltrepò Pavese Pinot Nero was only vinified in white, began to nurture the idea of producing a great red from these grapes, also driven by his visceral passion for French wines. In the following years, the estate experienced a constant, albeit modest, expansion, consolidating its reputation. Currently, the winery is managed by Nicola, Gianluca's son, who continues the work started by his father with the support of his friend Paolo Massone, a wine producer from the area.
Within the Ruiz de Cardenas estate, only the varieties of French origin Chardonnay and, above all, Pinot Nero, derived from specific clonal selections made from vines from Burgundy or Champagne, respectively for still wines and sparkling wines. The harvest is always done by hand and the fermentations take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. For the bubbles, the second fermentation occurs in the bottle according to the Classic Method, with aging on the lees in glass that lasts for a minimum of 36 months. On the other hand, still wines are aged in stainless steel tanks or, for expressions of greater structure and complexity, in French oak barrels. In general, the enology adopted by the winery aims to achieve the highest quality that the territory offers, and for this purpose, cutting-edge technologies and processes are employed.
