Villa al Cortile - Piccini
Under the Villa al Cortile brand, the Piccini family aims to express their vision of the prestigious territory of Montalcino, with the wise management of those who have lived in the world of wine for over 140 years. We are on the northern slope of the Ilcinese territory, precisely in the locality of Canapaccia, a place that the Piccini family has chosen as part of the "Generazione Vigneti" program, a project under which the family has grouped five estates in Tuscany and other Italian regions, selected over time to give free rein to their enological philosophy. Mario Piccini, the fourth generation of winemakers leading Piccini 1882, is supported in this ambitious project by his children Ginevra, Benedetta, and Michelangelo.
The Villa al Cortile – Piccini estate has 12 hectares of vineyards that extend from the Montosoli area, on the northern slope of Montalcino, to that of Lavacchio, in the southwestern part of the denomination. The vineyards, entirely planted with Sangiovese Grosso, enjoy respectively a cool exposure to the north and northeast, which contributes to the remarkable acidity of the grapes, and a warm and sunny southern exposure, which is the basis for the concentration of the wines produced here. Regardless of the reference slope, thermal excursions are fundamental during the ripening of the grapes, essential for the optimal development of aromatic precursors. The harvest is carried out by hand in boxes, in order to respect the integrity of the bunches, while the enological approach adopted by the Piccini family is inspired by tradition. For fermentation, specially regulated stainless steel fermenters of medium and small sizes are used, with macerations that usually do not exceed 10 days. The subsequent malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously, and the long aging process, which lasts between 24 and 36 months, occurs in large oak barrels, with capacities ranging from 20 to 50 hectoliters, in order to minimize the aromatic impact of the wood on the wine.
There are three labels produced under the Villa al Cortile – Piccini brand, all expressions linked to the territory, from the lively freshness of Rosso di Montalcino to the complexity of the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, going through the more classic Brunello di Montalcino.
