Castello del Terriccio
Castello del Terriccio is an important wine estate in Catellina Marittima, in Tuscany, and boasts a prestigious millenary history. The ancient ruins of the castle of Doglia, known as del Terriccio, date back to the Early Middle Ages; it served as a signaling tower for the Saracens coming from the sea and as a defense for the inhabitants of the plain. In the 13th century, the castle and estate were entrusted to the counts Gaetani by the bishop of Pisa. In the 18th century, it was purchased by the Polish princes Poniatowski who inaugurated agricultural activity, building a farm with farmhouses, cellars, and buildings. In the 1920s, the property passed to the counts Serafini Ferri, who increased cereal production, achieving the European record for corn production.
Today, Castello del Terriccio is managed by Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana, a descendant of an ancient and noble family, credited with starting, from 1993, the production of very fine wines, choosing the most suitable lands of the estate.where to plant the vineyards. The estate extends over 1700 hectares populated by plants of all kinds, olive groves, and wheat fields. There is also an important breeding of cattle and racehorses. The vineyards extend over 60 hectares on soils rich in mineral elements, including iron and copper. Here you can find the main international grape varieties, capable of producing robust and important red wines: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot. In the cellar dating back to the 1800s, the grapes are processed with the aim of preserving and enhancing their original characteristics and peculiarities.
