Calatroni
Calatroni is one of the most important brands of Oltrepò Pavese. It is a family-run business that produces wines of excellent quality, which are part of the exclusive elite of prestigious labels of a territory that continues to present many shadows and few lights. The Calatroni family has been cultivating vineyards for several generations in the area of Montecalvo Versiggia, first under a sharecropping system and since the 1960s with their own land. The deep knowledge of the places and an ancient peasant culture in land management have merged with the modern enological knowledge of the new generations, who have brought enthusiasm and renewed passion.
The estate is located in the wonderful hilly area of Oltrepò Pavese, a land always suited to viticulture, since ancient times. This small triangle of Lombardy, nestled between Piemonte and Emilia, is part of the long hilly strip that runs uninterruptedly from Monferrato to the Colli Piacentini. It is an area with a mild and breezy climate, characterized by very suitable lands, consisting of fine calcareous-clay marls. The estate's vineyards are cultivated on splendid sunny exposures, located at an altitude between 200 and 400 meters above sea level. The particular pedoclimatic conditions have proven ideal for both the indigenous red grape varieties Croatina and Barbera, as well as for some international varieties such as Pinot Nero, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, and Riesling.
The significant temperature variations and a cool climate allow for the production of excellent base wines for the Metodo Classico. The sparkling wine production of Oltrepò boasts a long tradition and today represents, along with Trento Doc, Franciacorta, and Alta Langa, one of the best expressions of Metodo Classico made with the classic grapes of Champagne. The Blanc de Noirs are among the very best and also within the range of wines from Calatroni, they constitute an important part of the production. The estate is managed with particular attention to the environment, seeking to minimize interventions in the vineyard and using simple and veryrespectful of the raw material. Thanks to this minimalist approach, Calatroni manages to produce wines that authentically express the territory.
