Marko Fon
The winemaker Marko Fon is the protagonist of a small artisanal production in the Slovenian Carso, a land as challenging as it is suited for viticulture. Vinogradi Fon, the name of the winery, is located in Boriano, a small hamlet of the municipality of Comeno, an area bordering the Trieste side of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Marko nurtures the ancient family tradition with the aim of enhancing the terroir, a goal pursued through the cultivation of only indigenous grape varieties and, more generally, with a genuine and sincere production approach. Marko took over the family estate in 1993 following the death of his father, quickly establishing himself as one of the most interesting winemakers in the Slovenian Carso.
distributed across different plots, often characterized by very advanced ages that favor the quality and concentration of the wines. The harvest is carried out by hand only when the grapes have reached the right stage of ripeness, accompanied by a careful selection of the grapes, while in the winery the fermentations are entrusted exclusively to indigenous yeasts, with brief skin macerations for the white grapes, aimed at extracting the essence of the grape variety and the territory while always maintaining a certain drinkability. Malolactic fermentation is usually carried out while for the aging phase, stainless steel tanks or old large wooden barrels are used, depending on the label in question. All wines are finally bottled without undergoing any filtration.
The wines of Marko Fon reflect the indomitable mineral essence of the Carso, with a savory and energetic character that impresses from the very first sip. These wines, strictly monovarietal, also reflect the identity of the starting grape varieties, whether it be the exotic nuances of Malvasia Istriana, the tension of Vitovska, or the exuberant intensity of Terrano.
