Torre Mora - Piccini
Torre Mora represents the ambitious Etna project of the Piccini, one of the most important families in Italian wine in terms of numbers. In particular, the Piccini family chose to invest in a small estate located in Rovittello, a fraction of the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia included in the northern slope of Etna. Here in 2016, Mario Piccini, the fourth generation of the family engaged in the wine sector, decided to undertake a new project after falling in love with the estate, dedicating himself ambitiously to the renewal of the vineyards and the winery.
The Torre Mora estate includes 15 hectares of vineyards distributed over two vineyards, located respectively in Contrada Dafara Galluzzo, in the territory of Rovittello, and in Contrada Alboretto Chiuse del Signore, in the municipality of Linguaglossa. The plants are between 10 and 15 years old and rest on volcanic soils, shallow and very rich in mineral elements. Furthermore, the vines benefit from the high altitude, ranging from 600 to 700 meters above sea level, and the significant temperature variations between day and night that accompany the maturation of the grapes. Based on these singular environmental and pedoclimatic parameters, Torre Mora cultivates the native varieties Nerello Cappuccio, Carricante and, above all, Nerello Mascalese, vines grown using the Etna bush training and spurred cordon systems, adopting agronomic practices that respect the principles of organic farming, certified since 2018. Generally, once harvested, the grapes undergo a short cold pre-fermentation maceration, in order to enhance the aromatic heritage of the grapes. For the fermentations, stainless steel tanks are then used to ensure a controlled fermentation process, while the subsequent maturation periods take place in wooden barrels or still in steel, depending on the label in question.
Through the wines of Torre Mora, the Piccini family intends to tell its enological vision of the largest active volcano in Europe, enhancing the distinct mineral signature that is a distinctive feature of the wines produced here. Thanks to the work of the Piccini, Torre Mora wines are now present in the major wine markets around the world.
