Fay Sandro

Sandro Fay represents one of the most important and appreciated producers in all of Valtellina due to his elegant wines and the authentic and eco-sustainable production philosophy. The winery was founded in 1973 by Sandro, who collected and enhanced the small family production. Since 1998 he has been joined by his children Marco and Elena, who form a close-knit family team committed to enhancing the characteristics of each single vineyard, unique for its pedological and altimetric attributes.

The 15 hectares of vineyards owned by the Sandro Fay estate rest on the characteristic terraces that shape the Retic side of Valtellina, reserved for the symbolic variety of the territory: Nebbiolo, locally called Chiavennasca. In addition to Nebbiolo, the Fay family cultivates a small portion of international grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Syrah. Due to the steep slopes, agricultural operations are carried out entirely by hand in a wine-growing context that represents one of the most striking examples of heroic viticulture. The altitudes range from 350 up to as much as 900 meters above sea level and almost all the vineyards are located in the Valgella subzone, one of the five micro-areas that fall within the controlled designation of origin Valtellina Superiore, with the remaining part located in the Sassella subzone. The soils, derived from shattered granite formations, are predominantly sandy, with a lower percentage of silt and absence of clay and limestone, while the climate is very sunny and typically alpine, cool, and with significant temperature fluctuations between day and night during the ripening period of the grapes. In the winery, fermentations take place in stainless steel tanks, in order to preserve the extraordinary freshness and finesse of the wines, while the subsequent aging periods occur mostly in large oak barrels or tonneau.

The range of labels from Sandro Fay manages to reflect the sublime refinement and grace of the Chiavennasca Valtellinese, a Nebbiolo with a mountain soul that the winery cares for and works with great mastery, aiming to enhance its countless intrinsic qualities.
