Cantina Kurtatsch

Cantina Kurtatsch is a cooperative winery from South Tyrol that works with a focus on quality with the goal of offering great territorial wines. The winery brings together 27 collaborators and as many as 190 families, forming a young team driven by an innovative and ambitious spirit that never loses sight of sustainability, another essential value for Kellerei Kurtatsch. Founded in 1900 in Cortaccia along the Wine Road, aptly named “Kurtatsch” in German, this cooperative winery is among the oldest in the region. Its birth was a direct consequence of the crisis that afflicted the wine sector, a factor that pushed 42 visionary winemakers to join forces.

The cultivated hectares by the large family of Cantina Kurtatsch are 190, lovingly cultivated by each member. The vineyards are quite differentiated by soil composition and altitudes, with elevations ranging from 220 to as much as 900 meters above sea level and soils characterized by variable contents of sand, clay, gravel, limestone, dolomite, and red sandstone. In general, the lower vineyards, distinguished by a warmer climate, are dedicated to the red grapes, which here manage to reach perfect ripeness, while the high vineyards are ideal for the cultivation of white grape varieties. The slopes are quite steep, with gradients reaching as much as 80%, and the temperature variations between day and night are very significant. Based on these environmental, pedological, and climatic parameters, the members of Cantina Kurtatsch cultivate the grape varieties Lagrein, Schiava, Moscato Rosa, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Nero, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Müller-Thurgau, Moscato Giallo, and Riesling. Fermentations mostly take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, in order to preserve the aromas of the must, while for the subsequent maturation phase, large wooden barrels, concrete tanks, and still steel containers are used, depending on the label in question.

From white wines to reds, including sparkling and rosé wines, the production of Cantina Kurtatsch reflects the qualities of the territory of Cortaccia, with fresh and fragrant expressions that rank at the top of the quality levels
