Travaglino

A historic reality of Oltrepò Pavese, La Tenuta Travaglino has been able to enhance a land always suited for viticulture over the centuries. Located at the extreme south of Lombardia, in the border area with Piemonte, Liguria, and Emilia Romagna, Oltrepò covers a vast hilly area, rising from the Po Valley towards the first pre-Apennine hills. The mild climate, always very breezy, and the suitable lands have proven to be particularly well-suited to host, in addition to native grape varieties, two noble international varieties like Riesling and Pinot Nero. The latter is also sparkling wine produced using the Metodo Classico to create cuvées of excellent quality. An ancient tradition that Travaglino has been able to interpret with passion and expertise, through a range of wines of excellent quality

The origins of the estate are very ancient and date back to 1111, the year in which the Castle of Calvignano and its surrounding lands are mentioned in a testamentary act in the presence of Johannis de Travalino, from which the current name of the estate derives. The agricultural company Travaglino was officially established in 1868 with a total area of 58 hectares. In 1965, from a farm dedicated to various crops, the property specialized in viticulture, radically transforming its appearance. It was during that period that the first company zoning was established to choose the most suitable plots for grape cultivation. In the 1990s, the estate was equipped with a modern winery to improve all winemaking and aging processes. Today the company is managed by the fifth generation of the Comi family, who continue to carry on the activity in the name of tradition

The property extends over an area of 80 hectares, located in a magnificent hilly area between Casteggio and Montalto Pavese, characterized by lands composed of calcareous clay marl and sandstones. The lands are divided into various vineyards with different characteristics of altitude, exposure, and microclimate, so as to cultivate each variety in the most suitable area. The two most cultivated grapes are PinotNero and Riesling, but there is also room for the native red grape Croatina. The enhancement of the territory goes through the adoption of sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices. Travaglino has adopted low-impact agriculture, which follows the principles of integrated pest management, with a minimum number of treatments.
